IT Career Readiness – Do You Have What it Takes to Be an IT Technician?

Most parts of the world have been touched by technology advancements, and there seems to be no signs of stopping.  As such, the need to support technology platforms are increasing.  With individuals and businesses progressively more connected, finding skilled technicians to trouble-shoot issues and secure networks continues to grow.

If the thought of leading the charge in technology support is appealing, a career in Information Technology just might be the job you are looking for.  IT Technicians have a special set of responsibilities such as installing, testing, and maintaining computers, network devices, and software.

Here are the top five qualities businesses are looking for in a prospective IT Technician:

Passion for Technology

You might be an IT technician if you research technology trends and poke around on networking and system admin forums just for the fun of it.  A successful IT tech is not only interested in technology, but passionate about increasing knowledge, sharing information, and staying up to speed on developments.

Interest in Problem-Solving

You might be an IT technician if you’re focused with an attention to detail.  Sherlock-style detective work is essential when trouble shooting failed servers, network performance issues, and virus/ransomware events.  The list is long, and every day presents itself with new and unique challenges found in the world of IT.

Awesome Communication Skills

You might be an IT technician if you enjoy sharing information, explaining how technology works, and resolving issues.  Great listening skills are a must when diagnosing a problem, and typically requires translating complicated terms in a way that is user friendly.  Having a calm and friendly demeanor often times helps de-escalate user confusion and frustration.

Drive for Self-Learning

You might be an IT technician if you enjoy learning, and discussing problem-solving tricks with like-minded individuals.  Because technology is ever-changing, possessing a drive to self-learn is absolutely essential.  Technicians really need to think outside the box while also committing to technology industry standards and best practices.

Optimistic Team Player

You might be an IT technician if you enjoy the company of technically minded people, and like working in a team environment.  It takes numerous skill sets, and optimistic personality types to make an IT team work effectively.  At the end of the day, problem solving during a high volume of customer service / technology issues, can sometimes feel overwhelming.  Knowing your team has your back, and that you are contributing your best effort can go a long way to keeping your enthusiasm and learning curve going strong.

Experience and Skills Required

So, what does it take to be a successful IT candidate?  If you have, or are working towards a 2+ year degree in Information Technology, you’re on the right track.  Having 2+ years of experience and knowledge of computers, servers, and networks is an even more compelling reason an IT company will give serious consideration to your application.  One can’t forgot the importance of good character, strong work ethic, and desire to grow in the field of technology either!

What are some of the duties of a successful IT tech?  Supporting and maintaining Microsoft Windows Servers, Exchange, Hosted Exchange, and Office 365 is a must.  Understanding security and network infrastructure is critical (routers, switches, and wireless access points).  Maintaining desktops, laptops, and mobile devices is required.  Possessing strong multi-tasking and organization skills is important.

What degrees or certifications are needed?  An Associate’s Degree or certification in related field is preferred.  Professional IT certifications such as Microsoft MCP, MCSA, or MCSE are helpful, as is Cisco CCNA, CCNP, or VMware VCP certifications.  One can’t go wrong with brushing up on your knowledge on the latest threats in cyber-security and what businesses need to keep their data safe.
